Make, model and often the exact lens. A photo claiming to be shot on a professional camera while the metadata names a phone tells you something.
Capture time and last-modified time are stored separately. When they differ, the file was edited or re-saved after shooting.
Many phones write GPS coordinates into the file. If we find them, we show them on a map — which is also a reminder to strip them before posting publicly.
Photoshop, Lightroom, or a generator's own signature. Some AI tools write themselves into the Software field outright.
Shutter, aperture, ISO, focal length. Real photographs carry a coherent set; generated images typically carry none at all.
Absence is information too, but weaker than people assume: messengers and social platforms strip metadata from everything. Missing EXIF is normal, not damning.
A named capture device, coherent exposure settings and a capture date point towards a real photograph. These fields can be forged, so treat them as supporting evidence rather than proof.
Some AI tools write their own name into the file. That is about as direct as metadata evidence gets — though it is trivially removable, so its absence means nothing.
The most common outcome, and the least conclusive. Anything that travelled through WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram or a screenshot arrives stripped. At that point metadata is exhausted and you need pixel-level analysis instead.
