Reverse image search answers a question no detector can: has this picture appeared before? That matters because the most common visual misinformation is not generated or edited — it is a real photograph, recycled with a new story attached.
Forensic analysis examines the file. If the file is a genuine, unedited photograph, it will come back clean — even when the caption is a complete fabrication.
A photo from a protest three years ago in another country, captioned as today's news, passes every technical check. Nothing is wrong with it. Only finding its earlier appearances exposes the lie.
This is why reverse search comes first in any verification sequence and why skipping it wastes the most time.
They index differently, so use more than one. The differences are large and consistent.
Google Lens — broadest index, best for objects, products, plants, landmarks and finding visually similar pictures.
Yandex — noticeably stronger on faces and on locations, particularly in Europe and Asia. Often finds matches the others miss entirely, which makes it the first stop for profile photos.
TinEye — oldest, indexes fewer images but sorts by first-seen date. Best tool for answering “where did this appear earliest”, which is usually the question that matters.
Bing Visual Search — decent coverage, sometimes surfaces different results, worth a second pass.
Crop before searching. Isolate the distinctive part — a face, a logo, a building. Backgrounds dilute the match.
Try more than one crop. The face and the location may appear in completely different sources.
Sort by date where possible. TinEye's oldest-first view usually settles a recycling claim in one look.
Search a video frame. Screenshot the clearest frame and search that; video is not indexed, but frames often are.
Generated images will not be found. They never existed anywhere else. A blank result is entirely consistent with a face produced by a generator yesterday — which is precisely the case where you need forensic analysis instead.
Edited images may not match. Crop, flip, recolour and the fingerprint changes enough to miss.
Private sources are invisible. Anything behind a login, in a closed group or never published simply is not in any index.
So a blank result means nothing on its own. It is the *positive* finding that carries weight.
The two approaches are complementary, and neither replaces the other. Reverse search finds recycled real photos and cannot see generation. Forensics finds generation and manipulation and cannot see context.
Practical order: reverse search, then metadata, then forensic analysis, then source tracing. Most images resolve at step one — and when they do not, you have narrowed the problem considerably.
